PatchArena has released Contact Space Kalimba, a free SFZ instrument featuring the sound of a kalimba captured with a DIY piezo microphone.
Kalimba recorded with homebrew contact microphone plus SPACE reverb! Heavy reverb usage intended for filmscore percussion and other textures.
I liked the sound of the instrument. The fact that it was recorded with a contact microphone gave it a stronger attack, making it sound a bit more like a music box than a kalimba. I?ve made a quick little audio demo which you can hear below (it was processed with a healthy amount of epicVerb by Variety Of Sound).
By the way, for some reason the instrument sounded a bit quirky in Zampler by Beat Magazine, so I had to use it with SFZ player. I haven?t tested Contact Space Kalimba in Alchemy Player yet.
Contact Space Kalimba is available for free download via PatchArena (56MB download size, 18 samples in 24-bit WAV format, 2-3 round robin variations per note).
